embroidery thread organisation
I’ve recently organised my embroidery threads and it has been quite the journey! I wanted to share with you how I chose to do it, where I brought my supplies from and a few bits I learnt along the way. Just incase you also have a hideous pile of threads in need of some organisation too!
I’m a tad embarrassed to show you these photos, eek! I’m sorry for the quality as they’re taken from an instagram story video, but this was how my threads were stored - in a hideous mess of tangles and knots. I could never find the right colour I needed and would ALWAYS lose the little tag telling me what number thread it was, so reordering the same thread for certain projects was a nightmare. After some help from my wonderful Instagram community I was pointed me in the right direction and got organised! Thank you to anyone who replied, it really helped!
I ordered all my supplies from HobbyCraft, using their click and collect service which is so brilliant(especially during lockdown!). I brought these thread boxes, and these cardboard bobbins. In hindsight I over ordered on the cardboard bobbins as the thread boxes come with 100 bobbins in them already, something to remember!
I started by writing down the thread colour number on the top of the bobbin and then wound the thread around the bobbin. Once I came to the end of the thread I tucked the end into the little slit on the bobbin to secure it.
I really enjoy these kinds of tasks, I find them super satisfying and love the repetition of the process. Although when you’re on your 200th bobbin it can feel a little painful…definitely put the TV on while you wind to make it a little more enjoyable. I watched season 1 of The Bold Type on Netflix which I thoroughly enjoyed!
When all your bobbins are wound you’ll be so super pleased with yourself and your work. I definitely took a few moments here to admire my hard work.
Having all my threads neatly organised has helped me SO much. I can find the colours I need so much quicker as it’s all laid out in front of me and re-ordering threads is a much simpler process. Having the thread number on the bobbin at all times is so so handy!
Re-organising your threads is quite a task but I can guarantee you will not regret doing it!
